Position Overview
The Senior Cell Design Engineer will be a key team member in an aggressive product design, development and analysis effort to produce and commercialize next-generation electrode materials, cell design and analysis techniquesThe focus of this position will be cell design, development, analyzing and launching cell products along with APQP process. This individual will identify the requirement through analysis, design DOE to test new materials, oversee cell builds, evaluate the results and make decisions and recommendations for the next steps of the development

Responsibilities



Primary responsibilities

  • Design, develop, validate and analyze lithium ion cell components, assemblies, specifications and the full suite of the Phase Gate Process.
  • Execute analysis of key requirement for application and test result
  • Evaluate emerging anode and cathode materials and electrolytes, electrodes and cell designs against A123 requirements for next generation product performance, safety, and cost
  • Improve cell performance, quality, and abuse tolerance, increase the yields and reduce cost via DOE and advanced experimentation techniques
  • Analyze and evaluate cell data to determine direct and interaction effects of the materials under evaluation and plan and execute root-cause analysis of failures and appropriate action incurred over course of development and launch.
  • Identify short and long term roadmap for achieving high performance and cost reduction goals for Li-Ion battery separators
  • Identify the safety mechanism and create plan and execute to improve safety based on knowledge and understanding mechanism, especially for the cell using oxide chemistry
  • Develop and create report, comprehensive technical specifications, DFMEA.
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing teams in order to resolve manufacturing process issues.
  • Effectively communicate results to broader teams in the US and abroad.
  • Interface closely with R&D scientists to increase understanding of failure modes, performance and life expectancy of lithium-ion cells.
  • Assist with engineering-level test builds together with quality and operations personnel at manufacturing facilities.
  • Collaborate with Supplier Quality team in their communication with material suppliers, related to the development and validation of detailed material specifications for new materials, and the resolution of any quality issues
  • Understand and adhere to program timelines

 

 

Qualifications

 

Specific Skills/Abilities

 

  • The position requires a self-starting, highly organized individual capable of identifying opportunities and taking responsibility for project implementation.  
  • Excellent analytical skills, data analysis and statistical interpretation
  • Highly understanding of electrochemical characterization e.g. ac impedance, SOH analysis, charge acceptance, cycle life etc.
  • Highly understanding of failure mechanism in abuse testing for lithium ion battery
  • Excellent knowledge of formation mechanism
  • Hands-on experience with developing technical specifications for components and assemblies
  • Experience with developing technical specifications for materials
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in development of products for large volume production in a structured environment using DFSS or APQP methods
  • Individual drive and flexibility to work in a rapidly developing entrepreneurial environment
  • Resourceful, organized, with strong attention to detail and excellent interaction skills, capable of rapidly integrating observations and results into subsequent development activities

 

Education/Experience

  • Over 5 years related experienced in a structured lithium ion battery product development environment.
  • MS/PhD in Chemical, Material, Electrical Engineering or electrochemistry
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in design and development of components and cell design for lithium ion battery
  • Competency in the DFMEA process. Working experience with Quality & Reliability disciplines (APQP and 8D.
  • Experience in design, development and process of batteries/ lithium ion cells
  • Familiarity with Statistical Analysis and Design of Experiments (Minitab) preferred
  • Experience and high knowledge in separator development preferred
