A123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets.

 

Position Overview
The Lab Technician will work under the direction of the group lead or senior engineer with the primary role of mechanical testing of cell level materials and components in support of new product development, product improvements and cell product cost reduction efforts. This individual will be required to operate various mechanical lab equipment including,  Tensile-compression tester,  x-ray imaging equipment, metallurgical cross sectioning and sample preparation equipment, Helium leak detectors, optical microscopes, glove boxes and precision measurement equipment. This individual will also work with equipment vendors and service providers to maintain and repair laboratory equipment as required.

 

Responsibilities

 


Primary responsibilities

  • Execute material and component testing under direction of cell development engineer
  • Operate lab equipment in support of material and component mechanical testing
  • Conduct prototype and production battery cell physical teardowns and failure analysis.
  • Prepare, polish and image x-sections and metallurgical mounts of components, welds and seal assemblies
  • Interface with equipment vendors and service providers for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Manage inventory of lab consumable materials
  • Develop and document new and/or improved test methods and standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare test reports, including data analysis  using MS Excel and/or MiniTab

Successful candidates will be both quality and detail oriented, be team oriented and flexible. They will possess good interpersonal skills, be proficient in written and verbal communication and be able to interface with co-workers and management.

 

Qualifications

 

Specific Skills/Abilities

  • The position requires attention to detail and ability to work with a minimum amount of supervision.
  • The technician must be proficient with Microsoft excel and have some basic mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work with a variety of test equipment, some chemicals, and in a general lab setting is necessary
  • General lab skills, as well as ability to comprehend CAD drawings is required.

Education/Experience

  • 1 –5 years experience in product development or production environment
  • Associates degree preferred or High school diploma with more relevant experience.
  • Experience with materials testing and mechanical test equipment such as MTS or Instron is a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic math and statistical calculations.
  • Experience with Pro/e or similar CAD software a plus.

Experience with batteries or electrochemical systems a strong plus
