Overview

The Director of Cell Design (US) will be responsible for development of chemistry and mechanical designs for new lithium-ion cells developed by A123’s US-based team.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include managing multiple cell design teams, each of which is responsible for developing a different cell, and finalizing the design for handoff to manufacturing. Duties for this position include defining the cell bill of materials (BOM), cell drawing (CAD), and ensuring that the cell achieves all requirements. This position will interface frequently with peers responsible for modeling, validation, process design, manufacturing, sales, and many other functions. The preferred candidate will have a track record of product development, an understanding of Tier-1 automotive, the battery industry, as well as the research community. The candidate will also have a history of leading and developing strong teams of scientists and engineers.

 

Travel up to 25% (including international) required.

Qualifications

  • MS in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or related field of study. PhD preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in battery industry
  • Experience working in the automotive industry preferred (Tier-1 supplier particularly)
  • 5+ years in a product development role
    • 5+ years in a management role
  • Demonstrated record of launching products successfully.
  • Understanding of design-for-cost and value-added value-engineering (VA/VE)
  • Experience with concept, design, and product validation (CV, DV, and PV) as part of a product development environment
  • Familiarity with Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) or similar product development process preferred
  • Experience with formal root cause analysis or design of experiments (DOE) tools preferred (Ishikawa, Six Sigma, or other)
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) preferred.
  • Understanding of Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA, DFMEA, PFMEA) required
  • Demonstrated record of technical innovation, including publications, presentations, and/or patents
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
