Overview

A123 R&D is seeking a motivated Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) scientist to join the R&D team in Romulus, Michigan to support development of the next generation cathode materials. The desired candidate will be a Ph.D. graduate with post-doctoral appointment or industrial experience in the field of phosphate material synthesis and its application in LIB technology. This will require experience in different synthesis methods and equipment, deep knowledge in electrochemistry fundamentals, and hands on analytical techniques with technical understanding of the analysis and the results discussion. These analytical resources may include but not limited to several chemical techniques: gas chromatography with mass spectral detection (GC-MS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and elemental analyses (ICP-AES, C-analyzer) as well as several material characterization techniques: thermogravimetric analysis / differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), surface area (BET), particle size (PSA), morphology, elemental mapping, and structural analysis techniques (SEM/EDS, XRD).

Responsibilities

    • Develop new phosphate base cathode materials: synthesis and characterization.
    • Maximize analytical capabilities that are related to synthesized material characterization and/or process optimization. Perform daily testing, process output data and construct a report of results.
    • Innovative thinking and introducing new formulation, methods, tools, and/or compositions for performance optimization in cost effective approach.
    • The candidate would be expected to execute DOE on their own and to develop statistics deals with planning, conducting, analyzing and interpreting controlled tests to evaluate the factors that control the value of a parameter or group of parameters.
    • The candidate would be expected to be hands on and familiar with analytical instrument so as to deal with instrument malfunctions, perform preventative maintenance, maintain a consumable stockpile and execute relevant documentation.
    • The successful candidate would be accountable, self-motivated, data-driven and comfortable with reviewing the appropriate literature.

 

 

Qualifications

Specific Skills/Abilities

  • Experienced in phosphate material and other cathode material synthesis including but not limited to mixing, milling, spray drying, firing, and characterization.
  • Knowledgeable in DOE as a tool to optimize synthesis method and condition.
  • Experienced in different physical and chemical characterization tools, as well as different spectroscopic and microscopic analysis techniques.
  • Knowledgeable in electrochemistry fundamental and electrochemical testing and how to apply these tools for the development of innovative cathode materials.
  • The candidate should be able to deeply analyze output data and communicate relevant learnings to stakeholders
  • Thinks Analytically - The ability to break down problems, gain understanding, and make effective decisions.
  • Demonstrates an aptitude for independent and creative thinking as well as complex problem solving using innovative approaches.
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion battery manufacture, characterization, and failure analysis is highly desired.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and experimental design utilizing Minitab and/or Excel VBA code preferred.
  • Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to speak with clarity and interface effectively with co-workers.
  • Self-motivated and a team player.

Education/Experience

  • A PhD graduate in electrochemistry, chemical engineering or a related field with a concentration in LFP synthesis field and the hands-on use of a variety of synthesis and analytical tools and methods.
  • A 0-2 year postdoctoral appointment and/or industrial experience with a focus on lithium ion battery development especially in the making of cathode material and specifically LFP synthesis research is preferred.
  • Have experience or knowledge of instrumental modification and optimization is a plus.
  • Experience and familiarity with working in glove boxes and dry rooms is plus.

Initiation and responsibility is a must. Attention to details and comprehensive analysis is essential; team-player with a positive attitude and the ability to operate with minimal direct supervision is a major plus.
